Subject: Partners For Literacy
Partners For Learning Description: Partners for Learning (PFL) is a mutual partnership between Duke employees and Duke students in three main areas of services: teaching Spanish-speaking Duke employees English through an ESL (English as a Second Language) curriculum, teaching Spanish-speaking Duke employees computer skills and offering job training skills, and teaching English-speaking Duke employees computer skills and offering job training skills. PFL provides employees with opportunities for career advancement, and fosters meaningful relationships beyond academic and workplace setting. It also provides students with first hand teaching skills through professional training for both English as a second language classes and the computer classes. Through education and social empowerment, PFL accomplishes community building in a program that benefits not only the student and the employee, but the integrity of the university as a whole.
